Assignment 2 (Cinematography & Filmmaking)

Brief
To shoot a live action video for 5-7seconds, showing creative and technical skills.

Preproduction
During the pitching of ideas, I pitch an idea that was inspired by a viral caught-on-camera video showing an eagle trying to grab a baby. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CE0Q904gtMI
In the end Mr Jame told me that it was too challenging to do and requires alot of observation skills. I changed the idea to someone pouring infinite potato chips.

Production
I went to shoot with Zul, Samson and Wenjie and help each other in the process. I bought many potato chips as well. During the shoot, I recorded two shots, pouring with an empty small potato chips packet and pouring alot of potato chips. I tried draft editing of the videos and found out the lightings were different, the height of the pouring was to low. I used puppet tool to position the pouring chips, but the lighting was totally off. I tried masking and paint brush the footage with alpha. In the end I do not like the results, I can see alot of errors in the video. (to be continued)

Post-production

Summary

Week 9 (Film and Audio Editing)

What did I do?
Done in class exercise
Review on Compression and EQ
Introduction to Boom microphone

What have I learnt?
We were given an in-class exercise in groups of 10 to create a film with the given dialogue. 10 of us were given a role (eg director, cameraman, editor). I was the editor. It was like a real work situation. During production was smooth, everyone knows what they are doing. During the post-production, the sound mixer told us the sound has alot of distortion and background musics. Right now there are two possible plans, record the audio of the actor (replacement of the voice) or Re-film the whole thing. In the end, we re-film the whole thing, because all of us agreed on the new film idea and believe it was stronger than our previous idea. Although some of our member had to leave first, the production and post-production went smooth.

Problems faced and can be improved:
I think that time management is the crucial problem for this exercise. I think that all of us will improve by the experience we faced.

Week 8 (Film and Audio Editing)

What did I do?
Using Audition
Introduction to Equalisation and Compression
Audio editing exercises

What have I learnt?
I learnt how to edit and adjust sounds using compressor and parametric eq.
Compressor makes the volume balance so that everything in the audio can be heard and Equalization makes the sound stick out.

Problems faced and can be improved:
The UI is quite hard to use at first and I believe I will adapt to it after the exercises.

Assignment 1 (Cinematography & Filmmaking)

Preproduction
In the first meeting, each of us present our story ideas, what are the different camera effects that is possible. There is one time where I stumble across the Green Hornet trailer where Jay Chou is fighting in slow-mo. I thought it is a very cool effect to do. In the end, we decided to do the film about super powers. Another idea is a mixture of Edge of Tomorrow and Inception, where the main lead is experiencing a loop, or deja vu.
Previz/ Draft Shoot
The next meeting just before we start our Pre-visualisation, we think that to have super powers in the film is abit challenging as we are afraid that the audience may not understand, and having just one minute duration is making it harder. In the end, we replace the super powers to a fighting scene. Fortunately when we arrive at the set, the weather is perfect, however we did not expect the weather to be that hot, we are all burning. We did a draft shot, looking at what shot is the best along the way, and went to edit straight away. The previz was ready, the first time we watch it, we are confused, to laugh or not, because it turns out to be a comedy film than a serious one, until we re-watch the previz with the music from a funny fighting scene in the movie Singham (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=giJCL_jhnsE), we concluded that we should do comedy.
Production
The next day, our final shoot, production. Things went smoothly.
The scene where I was being dragged by Mayamin was inspired by the Singham movie too!
Another scene after the ending where Zul and Mayamin was skating together and Mayamin hugs Zul. Actually, Mayamin was hugging Jing Xuan. The viewers did not know that and we are happy!
Summary
We got sunburnt but the process was fun. I gained experience in film making. Overall I am very happy with our work!

Week 3 (Film and Audio Editing)

What did I do?
Basics of Audio Editing
Watched a video of how editors edit audio in the past. (Audio Tape Editing)
Hands on to audio editing

What have I learnt?
I have learnt the basics of audio editing, how to edit using Audacity, eg cropping, moving, fade in/out, exporting. To edit the audio, you have to find the 'zero-crossing' on their waveform to get a smooth transition between different audios.

The problems faced:
Could not get used to the UI in Audacity.

How can I improve it?
Practice and use Audacity more often.
Pay more attention in class.

Week 2 (Film and Audio Editing)

What did I do?
Introduction to Digital Film and Audio Editing module
Watched The Cutting Edge: The Magic of Movie Editing (2004)

What have I learnt?
I have learnt the importance of editing, history of it, and different techniques of editing.
There are no format/basic rules for editing and a great film often contains 'unseen art' of editing.
I have seen how editors edit their films in the past, it was time consuming and tedious. I have learnt to treasure more on the softwares we have now.
